T's one of those months where the topics i could talk about would each fill 10 pages, but i limited to just one page. so let's talk about a few different things that might be impacting the computer hardware enthusiast. in other words, let's ramble and see what happens. what happened to all the high-end video cards? for a while there, i was wondering if nvidia and ati really were going to sell any of their flagship cards. nvidia's gpus finally started hitting the shelves pretty strongly in the last month, but many users are still looking around for supply on upper-end radeon products. on the flip side, we are already seeing some radeon x700 video cards in retail, which will interest you folks that don't like to spend 0 on a video card. the x700 from ati and 6600gt from nvidia look to both be excellent mainstream cards checking in around the 0 mark. interestingly enough, though, the x700s we've seen have been of the pci-express variety. and from what we can tell on the enthusiast end of the spectrum, pci-express boards haven't been in that much demand. right now, to have a pci-express slot means investing in an intel-based system with the new 915 or 925 chipsets. and quite frankly, the older i875 systems have been just as fast or faster in terms of performance. so let's review: you have to have a new intel system that's no faster than your last intel system considering equally clocked cpus ; to take advantage of pciexpress video cards, which are currently no faster than agp cards because the current high-end games don't need the wider pci-e bus ; and then you're likely to have trouble finding the pciexpress graphics card you really want because there's no supply. whew. and what about current ddr2-533 showing no advantages over ddr400? the higher ddr2 latencies are crippling compared to low-latency ddr400. this will all work itself out as ddr reaches much higher frequencies, and that will start to move forward this year on newer, unannounced pentium 4 processors. if you're putting off a major upgrade, we totally understand why. via technologies did show up the other day and gave us a pci-express board that used a socket 939 athlon 64 cpu. that was certainly exciting to see, but early sample boards from retail board makers aren't ready yet, although they should be by the time you read this. all of this means that we should have amd and pci-e before christmas. maybe there will be video cards to stick in those slots by then. speaking of amd, there are some very exciting things happening there. right now we have two 90nm-process amd athlon 64 cpus running on our test benches. these new processors don't bring anything new to the table in terms of performance or pipeline architecture, but they do have some advantages. the smaller process will allow for lower-powered cpus that will run cooler. the hope with this is that we will see better overclocks on the enthusiast front. hardocp will have coverage of this by the time you read this article, so make sure to check us out. the other exciting thing on the amd front is that amd is now selling lowerclocked cpus using the 90nm process for the socket 939 motherboards on the market. basically what this means is that you now can buy a 939-pin processor for less than 0 or so, where it used to be tough to find one for under 0. will these new 90nm cpus be good ocers? we have to think so. combine them with a via k8t800pro motherboard that has working pci agp lock and you will likely have a great platform for gaming and hardware tweaking fun. one thing for sure is that the really smart, current upgrade path for this year may not be fully evident yet. it may be a current intel system or future intel system. it may be the nextgen amd system. if you are looking for a bargain for gaming, we still suggest you check into a socket 754 abit kv8pro coupled with an inexpensive athlon 64. you can talk with kyle at kyle cpumag and poker betting.
