Reasons for poor performance of an airtight wood burning appliance. 1. 2. 3. only one wood burning appliance may be connected to each stainless or masonry chimney. a chimney should be two feet higher than anything within ten feet of it and should penetrate the roof by 3 feet. you will have more difficulty in getting a good draw if you have a long horizontal run of chimney or if you have too many elbows. in a well insulated or airtight house your unit may be starved of air. it may be necessary to open a window slightly to provide combustion air. beware that your forced air furnace or clothes dryer is not competing with wood burning appliances for air. burn only well-seasoned dry wood. green and damp wood will smoke more and deposit more creosote on the inside of your chimney. even 2 year old wood, if left in rain or snow, can be difficult to light. start your fire with paper and small dry kindling before loading up the firebox with larger kindling and eventually logs. clean chimney and rain caps, especially with spark arrestors regularly to prevent creosote build up which significantly reduces chimney draw. beware of environmental conditions which could create down drafting in and around your chimney. eg: house in a valley or in a clearing surrounded by tall trees. burn your fire hot for the first fifteen to forty minutes. being careful not to overfire. this will help heat the chimney and improve the warm air draw as well as helping to burn off some of the creosote deposits from previous fires and will reduce the chance of a chimney fire. it is recommended that you use the same size chimney to the size of the flue on the unit. eg: do not increase or decrease the diameter. read operating manual carefully before lighting unit. creosote section is very important.
